Cade continued down the path to the lake and found Maddie stomping and kicking the dirt while gesturing wildly at the sun that was low in the autumn sky. He’d have to leave soon because he could see a front was about to roll in heralding the next shift in weather. Cade didn’t want to be caught in it on the way to Anchorage. The weather tracker said he had several hours.

He decided to hedge his bet and called Cedric to set his outgoing flight with the village run instead of having Cedric drive him in later that evening. It only gave him a couple of hours at best, but it couldn’t be helped. Maddie wouldn’t get as much time to let off all her steam, but Cade could help relieve some of the stress. Luke would have to do the rest.

Instead of sitting and waiting for her to finish releasing her frustrations, after a short while, he made himself known, and held out his arms. “Madison.”

His voice must have startled her because she jumped and whipped her head around to see him. “Cade, I don’t want to talk to you right now. I’m not good company.”

“Okay, but I’m leaving early because of the chance of bad weather, so I thought I’d check on you before going. Luke is back, and he will take care of you until I return.”

“I don’t need a sitter. I’m grown, you know.” Madison seemed to realize her statement was in direct contrast to her present actions. She turned fierce brown eyes on him and warned. “Don’t say it.”

“Okay, I won’t, this time.”

Her lips tilted up slightly before she wrestled them back into a somber line. Cade openly grinned. He had dropped his hand during the conversation but put it out again, this time leaving no impression of choice. He wasn’t sure she would come to him, but Cade found his patience and waited her out.

There was no doubt that his Madison needed to be held, and he needed to connect with her before leaving for a week. He watched as she slipped her hand into his, her eyes still red from her angry outburst at the insensitivity of the cop.

Drawing her into his arms, Cade lowered his head, his lips touching and tasting hers. Madison was stiff for a few seconds, but his insistence created a similar response in her. Their kiss deepened, and soon his lips were exploring a creamy neck Madison exposed for him. She licked his ear, blowing warm air over his heated skin. She traced his jawline with her tongue.

Cade allowed his wolf out enough to satisfy the inner clawing desire to mate with her, but put a tight rein on the actual claiming. He could mate because it was natural to take her, but to claim her inner self, he had to wait for Lucas and possibly for the elders, if need demanded it.

Cade had been at the lodge enough times in the past to know where to steer his girl, and soon they were on the remnants of soft, mossy ground.
